As part of our ongoing research into compact affordable prefab housing, we developed a fl exible prototype for a mini 400 s.f. dwelling. The prototype was derived out of an intent to test the inherent potential of a 20’ x 20’ module both planametrically and spatially. The goal was to root the exploration in simplicity – the 20’x20’x20’ volume became the base building block within which sustainable, humanistic, tectonic, domestic and social strategies could be critically tested. The resultant prototype is not meant as a fi nite solution, but rather an open-ended pod affording a wide array of potentials for inhabitation, infrastructure, and social space.
