Urban Design Competition
The home is conceived as a live-work-gallery home for an artist curator. ‘Veil House’ emphasizes the y-axis, and verticality, to provide a counterpoint within the ground oriented community in which it is located, as such, it will act as a luminous vertical marker and beacon within the landscape of this small artist community. For many artists, life is characterized by two personnel ‘worlds’….the more solitary and introspective world of creative imagination, and the more public and extroverted world of public life, family, friends and society. The home expresses this duality through its two primary forms: the interlocking of a low opaque plinth- like wing framing an entry court, in contrast to a more transparent tower-like form, giving the home both an earthbound as well as skyward orientation. Veil House employs an operable screen-like skin as a strategy for veiling and filtering the private introspective world of the artist within from the immediacy of the public world beyond.
